Taste, Judgment, and the Thing AI Cannot Do

AI handles the logic. But logic was never the hard part.

AI has been around since the very beginning of computers. This is not some new phenomenon. Computing has steadily evolved from binary code and assembly language to the high-level languages we use today, all of it trying to bridge the gap between what a human wants and what a machine can execute. Predictability and mimicking have always been the strategy. Any system trying to follow human patterns starts there.

And in our attempt to translate cognitive behavior into technology, pattern recognition became the central pillar. We built algorithms that observe and replicate established patterns. We fed massive amounts of data into Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, Computer Vision, Robotics. All of it designed to perform relational tasks and simulate decisions.

At its deepest level, AI is built on one assumption: that intelligence is the processing of data and the observation of patterns to make decisions. That is the shift. Not “can machines be smart?” but “what if intelligence is just a series of logical processes we can code?”

But the human brain does far more than predict the future based on past data. It thrives on complex tradeoffs, original ideation, creative processes that sit far beyond the mathematical scope of any machine.

How the stack changed

To understand why taste matters now more than ever, look at how the tools evolved.

In the early days, the bottleneck was hardware. We were limited by physical space and vacuum tubes. Then the bottleneck shifted to software. We had the power, but writing the instructions was slow and manual.

Now we are in the era of inference.

Hardware is moving toward specialized AI chips, TPUs and GPUs, designed not just to calculate but to predict. Hardware is no longer just a container. It is an accelerator for pattern recognition at a scale the human mind cannot grasp.

Software is moving away from hard-coded logic toward probabilistic logic. No more rigid “if-then” rules. Instead, a living web of weights and biases that evolves.

The hallucination of logic

The current state of the art, Large Language Models and multi-modal AI, represents the peak of pattern mimicry. These systems can synthesize the entire history of human internet data in seconds. They can write code, paint images, compose music.

But they suffer from something fundamental. I call it the hallucination of logic. Because they operate on probability rather than truth or values, they can produce results that are mathematically probable but ethically or practically nonsensical. The output looks right. The reasoning is hollow.

This introduces what I think of as the cost of accuracy. As we push hardware to its limits to hit 99.9% accuracy, the remaining 0.1% of error becomes invisible. And dangerous. When a machine is mostly right, we stop questioning it. We trust the output because the track record is good enough.

That is exactly where human judgment becomes vital. To spot the subtle, high-stakes errors that happen when a machine has the skill but lacks a standard.

The mirror problem

Because AI is essentially a mirror of past data, it is inherently conservative. It can tell you what was popular. It can tell you what worked yesterday. It cannot tell you what is right for tomorrow.

An algorithm can calculate the most efficient route, but it cannot understand the beauty of the scenic path. It can generate a thousand variations of a logo, but it does not have the taste to know which one captures the soul of a brand.

That gap is everything.

Where humans still win

The machine handles optimization. We provide direction. That is the split, and it is not going away.

Taste is the ability to recognize quality, beauty, and emotional resonance. Not based on a statistical average. It is a unique, human perspective that lets us curate and select what is truly meaningful. In a world flooded with AI-generated content, curation is the new creation.

Judgment is what handles the gray areas. Situations where there is no clear mathematical right or wrong. Weighing ethical implications, cultural nuances, the long-term impact of choices. AI does not do nuance. It does probability.

Strategic decision-making is choosing a path the data might not yet support. That takes intuition. Vision. The willingness to be wrong. AI can give you the “what.” Humans provide the “why.”

What this means for us

As AI takes over the logical processes of intelligence, the value of the human mind shifts. We are no longer required to be the calculators. We are the architects, the critics, the ones who decide what gets built and why.

The future of computing is not just faster chips or larger models. It is the human in the loop. We provide the taste to filter the noise, the judgment to ensure safety, and the decision-making to lead.
